Jacob, why were you at the hospital yesterday?
Bah, bah, bah dah, dah
Oh, you were having an EEG done?
mah mah ba ba
Oh yeah, I bet it was scary.
bah, bah, bah, bah, bah
And you had to wait in the Dr's office for an hour and half before he told you that you weren't having infantile spasms? I bet you were nervous.
What a day! I have never been so terrified in my life while at the same time feeling so calm. Does that sound weird? I was scared thinking of all the implications that might come and yet at the same time, comforted knowing that all would turn our how God intended it. And if that's how He wanted it, I would be able to handle it.
I better start at the beginning. Friday morning, I began to notice Jacob doing some weird stuff. He would sit on the floor playing and occasionally his head would drop down on his left side kind of close to his legs and waist, it would stay there for a second or two and then his head would come back up. I wasn't so worried until it started happening a lot. By the time Michael came home from work, I was feeling sick. I had been looking on the internet and had found what they call infantile spasms. I had even watched a Youtube video of it and it looked exactly like what Jacob was doing. And what scared me even more was how scary infantile spasms can actually be to treat and the damage the do in the mean time.
Michael wasn't convinced that they were infantile spasms so we decided to wait out the weekend and see what would happen. They still happened Friday and Saturday but not near as much. But Monday they were still happening so I called the pediatrician and we scheduled an appointment for Tuesday morning.
At the appointment, the pediatrician basically told me some things that he was pretty sure it wasn't and then he said he thought it might be infantile spasms but he wasn't sure. But he said he would call the pediatric neurologist and see if he could get us in to see him in the next week or so.
When we got home, we got a call from the ped. neurologist's office telling us that we had an appointment at the UW hospital at 2:15 for an EEG and then the doctor wanted to see us but was full so that he would see us after all of his other patients.
The EEG went ok. Jacob really didn't enjoy the sound and feel of the blow gun that dried the glue and the electrodes to his head. But once they were on, we had fun and he was even giggling while we waited for it to measure the electronic activity of his brain. The nice thing was that the EEG would either confirm the pediatricians suspicions of infantile spasm or we would know for sure that he wasn't having infantile spasms. Isn't it nice sometimes in life to just get a yes or no?
After the EEG, we waited for an hour and a half. Then the doctor finally came to tell us the results. The EEG showed no results of infantile spasms! YEA!!!!!
I had brought in a video of Jacob and he looked at it and said that he wasn't too worried about it. So he said to keep an eye on him and if something is worrying me to give him a call and to also call him back for sure in a month and let him know how things are doing.
So we don't know what it is but at least we know that its not infantile spasms!
